This is such sad news.   Mel was a long-time friend.

This notice just appeared on Mel's Facebook page:

The Sather and Kaplan families are very sad to tell you that our darling
Mel died peacefully in the early hours of December 4 in Seattle. He was
surrounded by his family and a ton of love. A private burial with full
military honors will take place at Anchorage Memorial Park on Sunday. A
celebration of life will take place Wednesday, December 18, 4pm, at the
Alaska Native Heritage Center. Our brilliant, brave, funny, proud Aleut
husband, son, dad, father-in law, grandpa, great grandpa, uncle, cousin,
mentor, friend will shine his light on us forever.
